Is Your "Dry" Scalp Actually Just Build-Up?

If your scalp feels itchy, flaky, or tight, it's natural to assume it's dry. But in my experience as a curly hair specialist, that's usually not what's actually going on. Most of the time, it's build-up - not dryness.

Build-up happens when the scalp isn't being cleansed properly. It can come from only shampooing once, using heavier products, or a gradual mix of sweat and natural oils sitting on the scalp over time. Other things play a part too - hormones can increase oil production, certain medications can have an effect, and lifestyle factors like regular workouts and sweating all add up.

Here's the key thing to remember: your scalp is skin. Just like the skin on your face, it needs proper cleansing and occasional gentle exfoliation - not another layer of oil on top. If what you're dealing with is actually build-up, adding oil only adds to the problem.

Your scalp already moisturises itself. So if it feels dry, the better question to ask is: is it actually clean?

On your next wash day, try this:

  • Shampoo 2-3 times

  • Focus on massaging your scalp, not just running product through your hair

  • Take your time cleansing, and stay consistent with it

Cleanse properly, stay consistent, and keep your scalp clear - because healthy scalp really does mean healthy hair.
