4 Common Causes of Frizz (And How to Fix Them)

Frizz-free defined curls styled by Yasmine Byfield, curly hair educator + specialist Walsall UK.

A little frizz is completely normal, but if you're finding you're getting more than you'd like, it's often down to one (or more) of these four things.

1. No "cast" in the hair. A cast forms when you've used enough product to coat your curls, then let your hair dry completely without touching it. As it dries, the product hardens slightly - protecting your natural curl pattern while it sets. Once fully dry, you can "scrunch out the cast" to break it and reveal soft, frizz-free curls underneath.

2. Touching your hair too much while it dries. If you disturb your hair before that cast has formed, you risk breaking it too early - which disrupts your curl pattern and leads to frizz. The fix is simple: once the product is in, try to leave your hair alone until it's dry.

3. Sleeping on the wrong fabric. Cotton pillowcases create friction overnight, which can lead to frizz and even dry out your hair over time. Switching to a satin or silk pillowcase, or wearing a satin bonnet, smooths the surface, helps your hair hold onto moisture, reduces friction, and protects against breakage.

4. Using products that aren't right for your hair type. There are some brilliant curly hair products out there, but not every product suits every curl type or preference. Some people prefer a stronger hold from a gel or mousse, while others prefer something lighter, like a cream. It's worth experimenting to find what genuinely works for your hair.
